No dogs or cats for you unless you can get a hold of an exotic pair that likes to travel. You love pot bellied pigs or snakes or even the famous parrot. Who wouldn’t? These exotic pets bring a bit of your vacation home. But how do you take care of them?

  • Before you buy, get a hold of some information. Whether you check out an exotic website or blog, get the latest facts on the exotic pet of your choice. Being informed will help you later on when surprises come up.
  • Talk to others who have brought an exotic pet home. Find out the costs of such an arrangement. Discover how others confronted difficulties and cared for their exotic pet.
  • Make sure you have the space for the exotic pet and that the weather in your part of town is cohesive with the pet of you’re choosing.
  • Consider the not so common exotic pet as the newest member of your family. Bees are not just fun to watch, they provide a basic staple—honey. A rabbit may not be considered an exotic pet but it is if you’re training her to use the litter box indoors.
  • Talk to your local veterinarian. Find out about the diseases your new pet may carry.
  • Reconsider bringing a meerkat or black bear home. Neither does well in domesticated environments.
  • Make sure that you can legally raise your pet where you live. Certain restrictions may apply in your area.

Following the above guidelines will help you prepare for your new family member and make your exotic transition as enjoyable as it is safe.
